Overview

  • Tierpark Hagenbeck completed renovation of an enclosure originally built for rhinos over 30 years ago and later used for elephant calves, leaving it empty for years until early 2025.
  • Eleven-year-old tapir Yamari, who lost her partner Xingo in 2023, and three-year-old capybara Ramon moved into the upgraded habitat on May 27, enjoying the deeper pond immediately.
  • The refurbishment adds a larger, deeper pond to support swimming and diving, as highlighted by the zoo’s veterinarian, Dr. Michael Flügger.
  • Ample space and natural compatibility allow Yamari and Ramon to cohabit without issues, reflecting their shared South American riverbank origins.
  • The project forms part of the zoo’s broader expansion efforts, which include plans for a new giraffe facility currently under development.
