Hadag Christens Third Plug-In Hybrid Ferry Grasbrook

The vessel enters service as part of Hamburg’s effort to replace diesel propulsion with greener alternatives in its harbor network.

Overview

  • Hadag officially named its third hybrid ferry, the Grasbrook, in a ceremony on July 14, 2025.
  • The Grasbrook arrived in Hamburg in May after a six-month delivery delay and began operations at the end of that month.
  • Its plug-in hybrid propulsion lets the ferry run primarily on electric power while retaining a diesel engine for backup.
  • Grasbrook joins two existing hybrids, completing the rollout of three low-emission vessels in Hadag’s 28-ship fleet.
  • Traffic Senator Anjes Tjarks said the new ferries support the city’s shift from fossil fuels toward environmentally friendly drives.
