Habitual Train Snatcher Arrested in Case That Left Mumbai Doctor Maimed

A court has ordered a test identification parade after Mumbai police obtained custody through a multi-state handover.

Overview

  • Kurla GRP identified the accused as Mohammad Saif, also known as Asgar Ali Chowdhury, a 42-year-old Delhi resident linked to numerous chain- and bag-snatching cases.
  • Police say the June 4 incident occurred on the LTT–Nanded Express when a handbag was snatched, causing Dr Deepali Deshmukh to fall from the moving train and her husband, Dr Yogesh, to tumble after her, severing his left hand.
  • Investigators describe Saif as a former train hawker turned repeat offender, with over 30 cases across cities and a pattern of targeting the Kurla–Panvel corridor.
  • After a similar August 8 snatching at Kozhikode, Kerala, local police traced and detained the suspect in Delhi, and the Mumbai Railway Crime Branch later secured his custody and produced him in court.
  • A Kurla railway court has directed a test identification parade before September 26, as police cite CCTV footage and witness accounts to build the case.
