Gym Manager Who Survived Cardiac Arrest Saves Spin Class Member and Pushes CPR Awareness

Their reunion spotlights quick CPR with a nearby defibrillator plus the BHF’s 15-minute RevivR training.

Overview

  • Andy Palmer, 35, previously collapsed at a PureGym in Nuneaton on January 29, 2024, and later received a pacemaker before returning to work as a manager in Tamworth.
  • On July 7, 2025, Palmer administered CPR to member Andrew Ward, 49, during an early-morning spin class as an off-duty nurse used the gym’s defibrillator and an off-duty police officer assisted.
  • Ward was taken to Royal Derby Hospital, where an angiogram found two arterial blockages and doctors fitted three stents.
  • Both men say they had no warning signs before their cardiac arrests and have since formed a close bond, referring to themselves as “cardiac arrest buddies.”
  • They are now publicly urging people to learn CPR and use the BHF’s RevivR tool, noting PureGym’s partnership with the charity and its defibrillators installed with public instructions across UK sites.
