Guwahati Tea Auctions Log Strong Volumes as Low-Grade Lots Pile Up Unsold

Buyer preference for higher‑quality orthodox lots is sharpening the market’s quality divide.

Overview

  • GTAC sold 76.94 million kg during April–August 2025, including 72.70 million kg of CTC/Dust at Rs 223.30/kg and 4.24 million kg of orthodox at Rs 279.08/kg.
  • About 38% of teas offered this year went unsold, with weaker demand concentrated in lower‑priced lots.
  • Sales below Rs 200/kg totaled 31.65 million kg at an average Rs 160.76/kg, where the unsold rate was 43%, while teas above Rs 200/kg sold 40.86 million kg at Rs 272.13/kg with a 29% unsold rate.
  • Volumes continued to climb year on year as CTC/Dust rose 16.39% in 2025 and orthodox nearly doubled by about 94.5%, while prices diverged with a 2025 correction for CTC/Dust and a further 4.18% rise for orthodox.
  • Officials expect the current year’s tea crop to increase by 20–25%, and industry voices say recent U.S. tariff changes are unlikely to have an immediate impact given the U.S. share of 15.54 million kg in 2024.
