Overview

  • Opening the 80th General Assembly, the UN chief said the world has entered an age of “reckless disruption and relentless human suffering” and urged leaders to choose law over raw power.
  • In Gaza, he called the destruction the worst of his tenure, urged full implementation of the ICJ’s provisional measures to protect civilians, and pressed for a permanent ceasefire, hostage releases and humanitarian access.
  • He demanded an end to external support fueling Sudan’s war and commended recent US-led diplomacy on Ukraine, again calling for a full ceasefire and a just, lawful peace.
  • On climate, he urged a credible roadmap to mobilize $1.3 trillion annually for developing countries by 2035, doubling adaptation finance to $40 billion this year, and full capitalization of the Loss and Damage Fund.
  • He warned that aid cuts are “wreaking havoc” as UN finances tighten, welcomed the new international AI scientific panel and global dialogue, and met President Trump, who said the United States is “behind the United Nations 100 percent.”
