  • Atkinson suffered the injury during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, leaving the field after the final ball of his fifth over and not returning.
  • He is the third frontline seamer England have lost in this series, following Mark Wood with a knee issue and Jofra Archer with a side strain.
  • Matthew Potts is expected to come into the XI to join Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue for the Sydney Test starting January 4.
  • Carse is now the only remaining out-and-out express quick from the original pace group, while Atkinson finishes with six wickets at an average of 47.33.
