Gurugram Forms Emergency Committee to Combat Persistent Garbage Crisis

Private vehicle deployments, ward-level oversight and expanded collection fleets are being rolled out to stem an ongoing garbage backlog

Overview

  • A high-powered emergency committee led by Additional Commissioner Ravindra Yadav was established July 31 to set vehicle rates and monitor private tractor-trolley deployments.
  • Under Section 49(C) of the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, councillors and contractors are now permitted to arrange private vehicles for door-to-door waste collection as a temporary measure.
  • Since July 29, MCG has run a 36-ward cleanliness drive battling monsoon waterlogging and illegal dumping, with daily oversight by ward councillors and junior engineers.
  • The Haryana ULB Ministry’s ward-level plan assigns each ward one JCB, three tractors, four to five sanitation workers and performance awards to encourage rapid cleanup.
  • Infrastructure reforms include GPS tracking for collection fleets, a monthlong sewerline survey and tenders for C&D waste processing due before August 10.
