Gurugram Crime Branch Arrests Three After Sector 62 Shootout

Seizure of MDMA plus firearms led police to file attempt-to-murder alongside drug charges against suspected interstate smugglers.

Overview

  • A Crime Branch team acting on a tip set up a checkpoint on the road from Nangli Umarpur to Sector 62 and, when the three men arrived at about 11pm late Friday, the suspects allegedly opened fire and tried to flee.
  • Police chased the trio for nearly a kilometre and returned fire; nine rounds were exchanged in total and a bullet hit a police vehicle while an officer was wounded in the arm.
  • One suspect, Shrikul Sheikh, was arrested at the scene and two others, Marfat alias Maru and Phool Babu Sheikh, were wounded in the legs and admitted to hospital with formal arrest pending medical clearance.
  • Officers recovered 136 grams of MDMA, a pistol, a country-made firearm, an empty cartridge and a motorcycle, and the Sector 65 police station registered FIRs under attempt-to-murder, the Arms Act and the NDPS provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • Police say the three men are from Murshidabad and Nadia in West Bengal and already face multiple criminal and NDPS cases, with one suspect previously the subject of a reward for a drug case, which could broaden the probe into interstate smuggling links.
