Overview

  • 53,672 prisoners, representing 41% of all inmates, appeared via video conferencing from 83 jail units between January and June 2025, up from 40,633 (29%) in the same period last year.
  • Since 2022, the Gujarat High Court has installed 1,100 video conferencing terminals in courts and expanded software‐based systems to 83 operational units in jails.
  • Officials report that remote hearings have cut prisoner transport expenses and eased manpower demands on police, enabling custody personnel to be reassigned to critical duties.
  • The initiative is led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi in coordination with the judiciary, Gujarat Police and Prisons Department.
  • Authorities say faster virtual appearances are helping to clear court backlogs and support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national vision for tech-enabled justice.
