Gujarat Sends 22-Wagon Relief Train to Flood-Hit Punjab, Adds ₹5-Crore Aid

The move reflects a wider relief drive by several states alongside a central ₹1,600 crore package.

Overview

  • Gujarat’s special train from Gandhinagar carried about 400 tonnes of food and 70 tonnes of medicines, including flour, rice, onions, potatoes, edible oil, sugar and milk powder.
  • The consignment included 10,000 tarpaulins, 10,000 mosquito nets and 10,000 bedsheets, coordinated by the Relief Commissioner’s office with support from food, agriculture and health departments.
  • Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel flagged off the train with senior ministers present, while Gujarat also sent ₹5 crore each to Punjab and Chhattisgarh and dispatched roughly 8,000 relief kits to Chhattisgarh.
  • According to Gujarat officials, 11 wagons were filled by government departments and 11 by BJP workers for the Punjab shipment.
  • Other governments reported major contributions, including Haryana’s ₹5 crore and about 650 trucks, Delhi’s ₹5 crore and 50 trucks, Uttar Pradesh’s 48 trucks and Goa’s ₹5 crore, as political tensions surfaced over local relief efforts in Banaskantha.
