Gujarat, Rajasthan on Red Alert as Depression Triggers 48-Hour Deluge and Flash-Flood Risk

High reservoir levels trigger controlled releases, evacuations, NDRF-SDRF deployment.

Overview

  • IMD issued red alerts for parts of Gujarat and warnings for Rajasthan with forecasts of heavy to extremely heavy rain and flash-flood risk, particularly in Banaskantha, Patan, Saurashtra-Kutch, Barmer, Jalore and Sirohi, and advised fishermen to stay ashore.
  • The deep depression that drenched north Gujarat and southwest Rajasthan moved toward southeast Pakistan early on September 8 and is expected to weaken after 24–48 hours, with rainfall intensity likely to ease by day three, according to IMD guidance.
  • Gujarat has surpassed its seasonal average with 102.89% rainfall and about 1,009 mm recorded this monsoon—roughly 22% above normal—while Sardar Sarovar stands at 91.26% storage and 123 of 206 state reservoirs are on high alert.
  • Flood management measures included opening 27 gates at Ahmedabad’s Vasna barrage to release 93,658 cusecs into the Sabarmati, closing the riverfront lower promenade, shifting families from low-lying areas, and deploying 12 NDRF and 22 SDRF teams as more than 500 rural roads were shut.
  • Rajasthan reported severe local impacts including over 177 mm in Dausa and a school holiday order in Jaisalmer for safety, while IMD flagged continued heavy rain potential in Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jalore.
