Overview
- Gen. Mamady Doumbouya filed his papers at Guinea’s Supreme Court on Monday, arriving in an armoured vehicle as thousands of supporters chanted outside.
 - The December 28 vote will run under a new constitution officially endorsed by 89 percent of voters, which allows military rulers to contest and lengthens the presidential term from five to seven years.
 - Doumbouya had pledged after the 2021 coup that neither he nor other soldiers would run for president.
 - Key opposition leaders Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Toure remain in exile with their parties not expected on the ballot, and the Living Forces of Guinea alliance denounced his bid as a “disastrous turning point.”
 - Other contenders submitting applications include Faya Millimono, Hadja Makale Camara, Lansana Kouyaté and Ousmane Kaba, as the junta’s reconfigured electoral body prepares to oversee the vote with leadership appointed by decree.
