Guillermo del Toro Debuts IMAX Cut of ‘Frankenstein’ at Busan, Praises Korean Cinema

Netflix plans a limited IMAX rollout starting Oct. 17 followed by a global streaming launch on Nov. 7.

Overview

  • At a Busan press conference, del Toro lauded Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, citing films like Memories of Murder, The Host, I Saw the Devil and Train to Busan as examples of Korea’s distinctive approach to genre.
  • He described Frankenstein as a personal work about forgiveness and imperfection, calling the story autobiographical and shaped by a father–son perspective.
  • Del Toro said he is drawn to Korean monsters, accepted a translated Encyclopedia of Korean Monsters at BIFF, and expressed interest in supporting or producing Korean projects after further study.
  • Busan hosted the Asian premiere of the IMAX cut, with tickets snapped up quickly and attendees receiving a limited-edition poster by artist James Jean after a Q&A.
  • He also held a public conversation with Yeon Sang-ho at Netflix’s Creative Asia conference, discussing shared influences, animation-to-live action transitions, and embracing on-set accidents to serve the story.
