Guatemala Imposes 30-Day State of Siege After Police Killings, Mexico Captures FBI Top-10 Fugitive

The 30-day emergency grants expanded powers to target gang reprisals.

Overview

  • President Bernardo Arévalo said security forces retook the Renovación I, Fraijanes II and Preventivo prisons and freed hostages without fatalities inside the facilities.
  • Authorities reported nine police officers killed and about ten wounded in coordinated attacks around Guatemala City that followed the prison operations.
  • Officials blamed Barrio 18 for the uprisings and reprisals, vowed not to negotiate, and said alleged leader Aldo Dupié Ochoa, known as “El Lobo,” was neutralized.
  • The nationwide state of siege tightens detention and search authorities, reinforces joint police–military patrols, and prompted a one-day suspension of classes.
  • Separately, Mexican authorities arrested Alejandro Rosales Castillo in Pachuca on an Interpol red notice after FBI information sharing, and he remains in custody pending extradition to North Carolina.
