Overview

  • Making his major-league debut, left-hander Parker Messick worked 6 2/3 innings with one run, six strikeouts and one walk, departing with a 2-1 lead.
  • Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tied it with a leadoff homer in the ninth off Cade Smith, and Adrian Del Castillo delivered the winning RBI single in the 10th for Arizona's 3-2 victory.
  • Cleveland officially selected Messick from Triple-A Columbus on Aug. 20 and designated reliever Carlos Hernandez for assignment after Joey Cantillo was optioned earlier in the week.
  • Messick reached the majors after posting a 3.47 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 98 2/3 Triple-A innings and is ranked No. 12 in the system by MLB Pipeline, highlighted by a low-80s changeup.
  • The Guardians remain about three games back of the final AL Wild Card spot and are turning to younger arms as they head to Texas for their next series.
