Guantánamo Detainee Transferred to Tunisia After 23 Years Without Charges

The 59-year-old man, one of the camp's first detainees, was held since 2002 and never formally accused of a crime.

Ridah Bin Salih al-Jasidi, detained at Guantánamo Bay since its opening in 2002, has been transferred to Tunisia after nearly 23 years of imprisonment without charges.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced the transfer following a thorough review process, which began earlier this year under Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Al-Jasidi was captured in December 2001 by Pakistani forces near the Afghan border and handed over to the U.S., where he remained detained without trial.
This month, three other Guantánamo detainees were also repatriated, leaving 26 prisoners at the facility, 14 of whom are eligible for transfer.
Efforts to close Guantánamo have spanned multiple administrations, with President Biden failing to achieve the goal due to opposition in Congress.
