Guantánamo Detainee Transferred to Tunisia After 23 Years Without Charges

The 59-year-old man, one of the camp's first detainees, was held since 2002 and never formally accused of a crime.

  • Ridah Bin Salih al-Jasidi, detained at Guantánamo Bay since its opening in 2002, has been transferred to Tunisia after nearly 23 years of imprisonment without charges.
  • The U.S. Department of Defense announced the transfer following a thorough review process, which began earlier this year under Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
  • Al-Jasidi was captured in December 2001 by Pakistani forces near the Afghan border and handed over to the U.S., where he remained detained without trial.
  • This month, three other Guantánamo detainees were also repatriated, leaving 26 prisoners at the facility, 14 of whom are eligible for transfer.
  • Efforts to close Guantánamo have spanned multiple administrations, with President Biden failing to achieve the goal due to opposition in Congress.
