Rockstar Games Reports $5 Million Loss Due to Cyberattack

  • Arion Kurtaj, an 18-year-old hacker, has been sentenced to life in a secure hospital after leaking footage from the unreleased video game Grand Theft Auto VI.
  • Kurtaj, a member of the international hacking group Lapsus$, was found guilty of multiple offenses, including computer intrusion, blackmail, and fraud.
  • While on bail awaiting sentencing for previous cyberattacks, Kurtaj carried out the Grand Theft Auto hack using an Amazon Fire TV Stick, a hotel television and his mobile phone.
  • Rockstar Games, the developer of Grand Theft Auto, reported that the hack cost the company $5 million and thousands of staff hours.
  • Kurtaj will remain in the secure hospital until mental health professionals decide he no longer poses a risk to the public.
