GST Cuts Lift September SUV Sales in India as Hyundai Drops to Fourth

GST 2.0 price reductions during the festive window shifted demand toward value-focused SUVs.

Overview

  • Hyundai retailed 51,547 vehicles in September, up 1% year on year and 17% month on month, yet ranked fourth for the month behind Tata and Mahindra.
  • Hyundai Creta led midsize SUVs with 18,861 units, followed by Mahindra’s Scorpio family at 18,372 and the XUV700 at 9,764, with Toyota Hyryder at 7,608 on strong hybrid demand.
  • Price cuts tied to GST 2.0 boosted the Hyundai Venue, which rose to 11,484 units after reductions of up to Rs 1.50 lakh depending on variant.
  • Electrified and hybrid outcomes were uneven as Tata Harrier jumped 161% year on year to 4,181 units with the electric version joining the range, while Hyundai IONIQ 5 recorded just 6 units.
  • Hyundai’s Q3 2025 total reached 139,521 units, a 6.76% decline versus a year earlier, underscoring broader softness despite the late-September GST-driven lift.
