GST Cuts and Festive Buying Lift India’s September Auto Sales

Industry volumes rose about 5.5% year on year, with SUVs leading the gains.

  • Tata Motors logged its highest-ever monthly domestic dispatches at 59,667 units, up 45% year on year, as the Nexon led national passenger vehicle sales with 22,573 units.
  • Mahindra reported 56,233 domestic dispatches, a 10% annual increase, driven by 18,372 Scorpio units and strong contributions from the Thar and XUV700.
  • Maruti Suzuki remained market leader with 132,821 units and roughly 35.1% share, though its sales declined 8.38% year on year.
  • Passenger vehicle wholesales reached about 378,457 units in September, up 5.46% from a year earlier and 15.4% month on month following GST 2.0 price adjustments.
  • Electric car sales more than doubled to exceed 15,000 units, led by Tata’s 6,216 units, while FADA pegged commercial vehicle retail sales at 72,124 units with Tata No. 1 despite a slight annual decline.
