GST Cuts and Festive Buying Lift India Auto Sales to Record October

Early retail plus output data indicate a broader demand pickup.

  • Automakers sold over 470,000 vehicles in October 2025, up about 17% year on year, setting a new monthly record.
  • GST 2.0 moved small cars and all auto parts to an 18% slab, which industry leaders say revived entry-level demand.
  • Maruti Suzuki sold 176,318 passenger vehicles with 76,143 compacts, Mahindra posted a record 71,624 SUVs (+31% y/y), and Tata Motors reported 61,134 units (+27% y/y).
  • Commercial vehicles outpaced other categories as Tata’s CV sales rose roughly 10% year on year and Ashok Leyland grew about 16%, including a 34% jump in buses.
  • Retail registrations since Navratri increased 23% for passenger vehicles and 22% for two-wheelers, while electric two-wheelers diverged with Ola down sharply year on year and Ather up strongly; final Diwali-period data are expected around November 8.
