GST 2.0 Rollout on Sept. 22 Triggers Price Cuts From FMCG, Appliance Makers and Railways

Officials urge shoppers to check MRPs during the changeover.

Overview

  • The simplified GST structure with two slabs of 5% and 18% plus a 40% band for demerit goods takes effect nationwide on September 22, the first day of Navratri.
  • Appliance makers including Voltas, Daikin, Godrej, Panasonic and Haier have issued new price lists, cutting air conditioners by up to ₹4,500 and dishwashers by up to ₹8,000.
  • GCMMF (Amul) said more than 700 product packs will be cheaper from September 22, including 100g butter at ₹58 and 1-litre ghee down ₹40 to ₹610.
  • The Railway Board reduced Rail Neer bottled water MRPs to ₹14 for 1 litre and ₹9 for 500 ml, applicable across railway premises and trains.
  • The Consumer Affairs Department outlined a transition that allows old packaging until March 31, 2026 with stickered or reprinted MRPs and advised customers to recheck prices to avoid overpaying.
