Overview

  • The Indian Navy formally accepted INS Himgiri from GRSE on July 31, marking the first of three Project 17A frigates built by the Kolkata yard
  • The 149-metre, 6,670-tonne vessel is armed with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles and features an AESA radar plus CODAG propulsion
  • Project 17A encompasses seven Nilgiri-class frigates worth ₹45,000 crore, with GRSE’s three ships delivered under a ₹21,833 crore contract using 75% indigenous systems
  • The programme aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by engaging over 200 MSMEs and start-ups in the domestic defence supply chain
  • Building on its record output of 801 vessels including 112 warships, GRSE has 15 more warships in production and several have completed sea trials
