GRSE Delivers INS Androth, Second Shallow-Water ASW Craft for Indian Navy

The delivery advances India’s indigenous shipbuilding drive to strengthen littoral submarine-hunting.

Overview

  • INS Androth was handed over on September 13 at GRSE Kolkata and accepted for the Navy by Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, CSO (Tech), Eastern Naval Command.
  • The vessel is part of a 16-ship shallow-water anti-submarine program, with eight ships from GRSE and eight from Cochin Shipyard.
  • The class is designed in India to Indian Register of Shipping rules and uses over 80 percent domestic content, with some reports citing nearly 88 percent.
  • Androth carries lightweight torpedoes, indigenous ASW rockets, advanced shallow-water sonar and an indigenous 30 mm naval gun, and it uses a diesel engine–waterjet setup with three jets for shallow-draft operations.
  • GRSE reports two of its eight ASW craft delivered and continues building additional hulls alongside P17A frigates, a survey vessel (large) and next-generation offshore patrol vessels.
