Overview

  • Three constables at Vasai Road were suspended via an August 1 order for allegedly demanding Rs 15,000 from a man on the foot overbridge on June 13.
  • The complainant said officers seized his phone, took him to a station chawki without cameras, threatened arrest, and enabled a Rs 5,000 UPI payment to an outside agent without a receipt.
  • The suspension order signed by GRP Commissioner M. Rakesh Kalasagar cites conduct described as indecent, morally degrading, and against police discipline.
  • In a separate August 10 incident at Bombay Central, three other railway cops were suspended after an alleged Rs 30,000 extortion, with an FIR registered and the accused reported absconding.
  • Activist Sameer Zaveri highlighted GRP cabins lacking CCTV at Mumbai Central, Dadar, Borivali, and Thane, and a senior GRP official said a proposal to install cameras in such areas will be submitted soon.
