Overview

  • On lap 12 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Hamilton struck a groundhog which tore a hole in the right side of his Ferrari’s floor and destroyed vanes, costing about 20 points of downforce.
  • Hamilton then battled a brake issue and an extended first stint that left him stuck in traffic and falling from fifth on the grid to a sixth-place finish.
  • George Russell converted pole position into Mercedes’ first victory of the season, with Max Verstappen second and rookie Kimi Antonelli securing his maiden podium.
  • Hamilton, a committed vegan and self-described animal lover, said he was devastated by the incident that inadvertently killed the groundhog.
  • Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur confirmed that an upgrade package targeting floor and suspension improvements will arrive before the Austrian Grand Prix on June 29.
