Ground Broken on Darlington Government Hub, Future Home of Economic Campus

The Government Property Agency’s Brunswick Street build will make the campus the permanent base for seven departments outside London.

Overview

  • Chancellor Rachel Reeves led a January 16 groundbreaking in Darlington with Cabinet Office Minister Anna Turley to mark the start of construction.
  • Kier Group has been appointed lead contractor and has begun ground remediation to prepare the site for the main works.
  • The five-storey hub is designed as a modern, sustainable, digitally enabled office for more than 1,600 civil servants.
  • The building is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2028 as the permanent home of the Darlington Economic Campus, hosting seven departments including HM Treasury.
  • The project sits within the Government Hubs and Places for Growth programmes to relocate civil service roles beyond London and support regional economic growth.
