Overview
- The Landesamt für Straßenbau und Verkehr announced on 17 August 2026 that the new bridge for the B101 in Großenhain will not open at the end of 2026 and is now scheduled for spring 2027.
- Key remaining tasks — concrete placement, waterproofing and asphalt laying — require warm, dry conditions and cannot be finished during winter, so the site will be paused over the cold months.
- Project leaders say a summer ‘domino effect’ of extreme heat, heavy rain and delivery delays undermined the planned schedule and prevented the temperature-sensitive work from being completed on time.
- The previous prestressed concrete bridge was demolished in December 2024 after a special inspection found severe damage to Hennigsdorfer tension steel, and the replacement carries a budget of about €6.8 million.
- Local drivers will face extended detours until the new span opens, and authorities and the contractor plan to resume the final works when weather and deliveries permit, with officials warning that early-season conditions and supply updates will determine the exact reopening date.
