Grief Campaigner Found Dead at Same Cornwall Beach Where Son Was Discovered

The coroner has adjourned the inquiry pending medical findings after police said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Overview

  • Charmaine Lyn George was found on Portreath beach after being seen by a member of the public, and her body was recovered by coastguard, RNLI and police following a welfare call on October 5.
  • Devon and Cornwall Police said Charmaine’s next of kin have been informed and that the death is not being treated as suspicious; an inquest opened on October 22 was adjourned while the medical cause is determined.
  • Her son Ewan, then 18, was found at the base of cliffs at Portreath in 2020 and an earlier coroner recorded an open verdict because there was insufficient evidence to reach a suicide finding.
  • After Ewan’s death Charmaine founded a grief café and worked with the Good Grief Trust to run pop-up grief cafés across Cornwall, and she won the Caroline Flack Mental Health Hero Award in 2021; the charity has publicly paid tribute.
  • A full inquest is expected next year and the community has been left mourning a well-known bereavement campaigner, which may prompt renewed local focus on grief support and on clarifying the medical cause of her death.
