Grey Fox in Cancún Confirmed to Have Rabies

Health teams are tracing people and pets to offer post-exposure care to prevent human rabies.

Overview

  • A grey fox that was seen on October 3 in the parking lot of a Bodega Aurrera on Avenida Kabah has tested positive for rabies, the Quintana Roo public health laboratory confirmed.
  • The animal was captured in coordination with the state biodiversity institute, taken to the Centro de Control Animal, and euthanized so nervous-tissue samples could be analyzed and confirm the virus.
  • A one-year-old who was scratched during the sighting received immediate wound care and rabies vaccine and is reported in good health with no human rabies cases linked to this incident so far.
  • The Secretaría de Salud de Quintana Roo has opened phone lines (911 and 998 888 6640) and is actively contacting people and pet owners who may have had direct or indirect contact to evaluate exposures and give preventive vaccination when needed.
  • Rabies attacks the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms start, so officials are urging residents not to touch wildlife, to report sightings, and to keep pets’ vaccinations current as surveillance and vaccination outreach continue.
