Greta Thunberg Detained in London Under Terrorism Act at Protest Backing Palestine Action Prisoners

Police cited terrorism law that criminalizes displays backing a proscribed group following the UK designation of Palestine Action earlier this year.

Overview

  • City of London Police said a 22-year-old woman was arrested for displaying a banner in support of a banned organization outside Aspen Insurance in central London.
  • Video posted by Prisoners for Palestine shows Thunberg holding a sign reading, “I support Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide.”
  • A man and a woman were also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after red paint was thrown at the Aspen Insurance building linked by activists to Elbit Systems.
  • The action highlighted eight Palestine Action members on hunger strike in custody, with two reported by supporters to be in a critical stage after 52 days without food.
  • Palestine Action was proscribed earlier this year in the UK, and expressions of support can carry penalties of up to six months in prison, as legal challenges to the ban proceed.
