Gregory Twigg Jailed for Life for Murder of Veteran Lee Woodward

The judge credited time already served to set the minimum term at 11 years.

Overview

  • Judge Roger Thomas KC said the tariff would have been 14 years but reduced it to 11 to account for time in custody and on remand.
  • A jury found Twigg guilty of murder in July 2025, following his earlier 2022 guilty plea to grievous bodily harm with intent.
  • CCTV showed Twigg delivering three punches that left Woodward unconscious before fleeing; he was arrested within an hour in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
  • Twigg admitted drinking vodka and sambuca and taking cocaine, claimed he did not intend serious harm, and has prior convictions including batteries and a 2020 sentence for threats to kill and burglary.
  • Victim impact statements detailed the family’s suffering during Woodward’s deterioration in hospital, and police called the case extremely tragic after securing the conviction.
