• On July 9, 2025, LeMond will accept the Congressional Gold Medal at the U.S. Capitol after the ceremony was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
• The award was authorized by legislation introduced by Rep. Mike Thompson and signed into law by President Donald Trump on December 4, 2020.
• LeMond remains the only American to win the Tour de France following the disqualifications of Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis.
• Since 1776, Congress has seldom bestowed Gold Medals on athletes, with past honorees including Jesse Owens and Billie Jean King.
• The Congressional Gold Medal is Congress’s highest civilian honor and carries prestige equivalent to the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
