Greer and Mackay Elected Scottish Green Co-Leaders in Generational Shift

The younger duo step in with a pledge to sharpen the party’s progressive pitch ahead of the 2026 Holyrood campaign.

Overview

  • MSPs Ross Greer, 31, and Gillian Mackay, 33, were chosen as co-leaders, succeeding Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater after a party ballot announced in Edinburgh.
  • Gillian Mackay won 34% of first-preference votes and was elected at stage one, while Ross Greer secured the second post at stage three with 33.4% against Slater’s 32%.
  • Turnout was about 950 votes from a membership believed to be around 7,000, and both new leaders said the party should examine why participation was so low.
  • The pair highlighted priorities including expanding free bus travel, enforcing buffer zones around abortion clinics, a four-day week, improved parental pay and a basic universal income.
  • Harvie will remain an MSP and backed the new leadership, as Greer said the party will consider any post-election opportunity that advances Green policies, including potential cooperation with the SNP.
