Overview
- On August 13, seven Greenpeace climbers reached the platform about 45 nautical miles off Norfolk aboard the Arctic Sunrise and scaled the structure after waiting for calm seas.
- They attached a 39-by-26-foot (12-by-8-meter) canvas and used a high-pressure hose to spray roughly 1,000 liters of a red, non-toxic mix of seawater, beetroot powder and food-based pond dye.
- Shell said the group entered a restricted safety zone without permission and called the operation illegal and dangerous under UK rules.
- The installation is presented as the first display of fine art on a working gas platform and was carried out during the UK's fourth heatwave of the summer.
- The campaign builds on earlier offshore actions, including a 2024 case settled with Shell after a platform occupation, and calls for new taxes and fines on major polluters.
