Overview
- Seven Greenpeace climbers scaled the Shell Skiff platform 45 nautical miles off Norfolk to secure a 12m × 8m canvas titled ‘Butchered’.
- The activists used a high-pressure hose to douse the canvas with 1,000 litres of seawater, beetroot powder and food dye to create a vivid blood-red stain.
- Greenpeace said the non-toxic mixture posed no environmental threat and that the experienced team boarded safely without incident.
- Shell decried the operation as an illegal breach of a restricted safety zone that put lives at risk and violates UK maritime law.
- The stunt seeks to spur the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to enact ‘polluter pays’ levies on oil and gas extraction and shareholdings.
