Greenpeace Climbs Mexico City’s Estela de Luz to Demand Selva Maya Protections

City officials said no charges will be filed after the banner action pressed Semarnat to intervene.

Overview

  • About 30 Greenpeace México activists gathered before dawn, with nine scaling roughly 70 meters of the monument to unfurl a 26–27 meter banner that read, “La Selva Maya grita, Semarnat ¡Sálvala!”.
  • Police, firefighters and rescue teams cordoned off the area during the nonviolent action, and no injuries or detentions were reported as the climbers later descended.
  • The city’s police agency noted the stunt could violate the Ley de Cultura Cívica with possible fines, short arrests or community service, but the government secretariat confirmed no charges because the monument was not damaged.
  • Greenpeace said the protest aimed to pressure the federal environment ministry to act against rapid forest loss in the Selva Maya, calling for immediate protections and a review of permits.
  • The organization cites roughly 285,000–300,000 hectares lost in recent years, attributing damage to projects such as the Tren Maya, real estate and tourism development, agribusiness, sascaberas and megafarms.
