Green Paint Defaces Paris Holocaust Memorial, Two Synagogues and Jewish Restaurant

Surveillance images have spurred an expansion of patrols alongside heightened vigilance at Jewish landmarks ahead of the Shavuot holiday.

Overview

  • On the night of May 30, the Shoah Memorial, two synagogues in the 4th arrondissement and the Chez Marianne restaurant were sprayed with green paint.
  • CCTV footage captured a lone individual dressed in black defacing the memorial at around 4:30 a.m., and police report that no arrests have been made.
  • Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the acts as “heinous” and highlighted that anti-Semitic incidents now represent over 60 percent of anti-religious offences in France.
  • Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the city will lodge a formal complaint and affirmed that “anti-Semitism has no place in our city or in our Republic.”
  • The Interior Ministry has ordered stepped-up surveillance and visible patrols at Jewish-linked sites through June 3 to safeguard communities during the Shavuot holiday.
