Green Paint Defaces Holocaust Memorial and Synagogues in Paris

Paris prosecutors have opened a religiously motivated damage investigation after green paint was thrown on key Jewish sites.

Overview

  • The May 30 vandalism covered the Shoah Memorial, two synagogues in the Marais and a nearby Jewish restaurant with green paint.
  • Surveillance footage captured a person dressed in black spray-painting a wall at around 4:30 am, and an open can of paint was found at one of the scenes.
  • Paris’s public prosecutor has charged the case as damage committed on religious grounds, and no arrests have been made to date.
  • Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Mayor Anne Hidalgo condemned the acts as anti-Semitic and said they will press charges.
