• Rapid doubling of duckweed coverage under warm, wet conditions is intensifying as climate change fuels higher temperatures and nutrient runoff.
• Dense duckweed mats trap litter, block sunlight, deplete oxygen and hide open water hazards that have led to at least five falls at Walsall Town Wharf.
• Residents warn the green surface can be mistaken for grass and have urged the installation of warning signs to prevent further accidents.
