Overview

  • Authorities evacuated around 5,000 residents from villages north of Athens, including Kryoneri, after a fire near Drosopigi advanced toward urban areas.
  • Since last Tuesday roughly 10,000 people have been displaced by dozens of simultaneous blazes in Euboea, the Peloponnese, Central Greece and northern regions.
  • Six firefighters on Euboea were injured—five with respiratory problems and one with minor burns—and two tanker trucks were destroyed when overrun by flames.
  • The wildfire has destroyed at least three homes in Kryoneri and reached nearby small industrial zones, where explosions were reported.
  • More than 100 firefighters with 36 trucks, two airplanes and three water-dropping helicopters continue battling flames under extreme heat and strong winds.
