Overview

  • The appeals court upheld last year’s verdicts and added four more convictions for a total of ten, including former fire brigade officials and an individual accused of arson.
  • Eleven defendants, among them regional governors, were acquitted of all charges.
  • Sentencing scheduled for Wednesday could impose suspended prison terms or fines on those found guilty of misdemeanour charges.
  • Victims’ relatives disrupted the hearing with protests, releasing black balloons and white roses and shouting “shame” at the verdict.
  • The 2018 blaze killed 104 people as they fled through forested streets and has renewed scrutiny of Greece’s emergency response and the growing wildfire risks driven by climate change.
