Overview

  • More than 50 wildfires erupted nationwide in a 24-hour span from July 26–27, stretching Hellenic Fire Service resources across Attica, Evia, Crete and Kythera.
  • Evacuation orders remain in effect for Athens suburbs such as Kryoneri and Drosopigi, with police assisting the overnight relocation of at least 27 residents from at-risk areas.
  • At least 335 firefighters, supported by 19 planes, 13 helicopters and dozens of vehicles—including six aircraft provided through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and Czech teams—are engaged in containment efforts.
  • Authorities report that multiple fire fronts are now contained or under control, but warn that temperatures up to 44°C and strong winds will sustain a very high risk today.
  • Blazes have destroyed homes, damaged factories storing flammable materials, knocked out power and water networks on Evia and inflicted burns and smoke inhalation injuries on residents and responders.
