Greece Confirms First HMHS Britannic Artifacts Recovered for Museum Display

Greek officials say a May recovery yielded the first Britannic objects, now under conservation in Athens for planned exhibition in Piraeus.

Overview

  • The Culture Ministry announced that divers retrieved items from the wreck in May, marking the first confirmed recovery from the Titanic sister ship.
  • Recovered pieces include the lookout bell, a port-side navigation lamp, passenger binoculars, silver-plated serving trays, Turkish bath tiles, and a porcelain sink.
  • An 11-member technical team conducted a week-long operation using closed-circuit rebreathers in strong currents and low visibility, limiting what could be lifted.
  • The artifacts are being conserved in Athens and are slated for the permanent collection at the new Museum of Underwater Antiquities in the port of Piraeus.
  • Britannic sank in 1916 off Kea after striking a mine, with about 30 deaths, and the wreck lies roughly 120 meters deep, discovered by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1975.
