Greece Confirms First Artifacts Recovered From the Britannic, Titanic’s Sister Ship

The finds have been moved to Athens for conservation ahead of a permanent display at Piraeus’s new underwater antiquities museum.

Overview

  • An 11-member team ran a weeklong closed-circuit diving operation in May under Greece’s Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.
  • Objects retrieved from more than 120 meters include the lookout bell, port-side navigation light, ceramic Turkish-bath tiles, a pair of binoculars, silver-plated trays, and a porcelain sink.
  • The research was organized by British historian Simon Mills, founder of the Britannic Foundation, with Greek state supervision.
  • Challenging currents, depth and low visibility limited access, leaving some targeted items unrecovered due to location or preservation concerns.
  • The Britannic sank in 1916 after striking a German mine off Kea, with 30 of more than 1,060 aboard killed when lifeboats were drawn into the propellers.
