Greater Cleveland to Adopt New 436 Area Code in March

The introduction of the 436 area code is a response to the exhaustion of the current 440 area code, set to begin on March 1, 2024.

Starting March 1, 2024, new phone lines in parts of Greater Cleveland will receive the 436 area code, replacing the nearly exhausted 440 area code.
The 436 area code will cover the same geographic areas as the current 440 area code, including parts of Northeast Ohio and the Cleveland metropolitan area.
Existing phone numbers within the 440 area code will remain unchanged, affecting only new phone line installations.
The change comes as more devices connect to phone numbers, leading to quicker exhaustion of available area codes.
The 440 area code, introduced in 1997, is expected to become exhausted by the second half of 2024.
