Greater Bengaluru Authority Will Take Over BDA Planning Powers After Inaugural Meeting

BJP legislators boycotted over late notice, citing concerns about mayoral authority.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Siddaramaiah chaired the first GBA session at Kempegowda Municipal Hall and set priorities on waste management, traffic relief, revenue growth and coordination among agencies such as BDA, BWSSB, BESCOM and BMRCL.
  • Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said the GBA becomes the planning authority within its notified limits, with BDA powers including TDR shifting to the GBA, while BDA continues in its own area under the new framework.
  • He directed formation of a committee to drive slum redevelopment and clarified that waste collection will be handled by the five corporations, with 33 tenders currently under judicial review.
  • Local spending caps were raised to speed works: mayors to ₹10 crore, standing committees to ₹5 crore and municipal commissioners to ₹3 crore across the five corporations.
  • BJP leaders skipped the meeting alleging the seven‑day notice norm was ignored and arguing the model sidelines elected bodies under the 74th Amendment, and they said a PIL has been filed.
