Greater Anglia to Enter Public Ownership on Oct. 12, Taking Public Control to Half of Rail Operators

The push advances ahead of GBR legislation with fare policy for next year still unresolved.

Overview

  • Services on the Greater Anglia network transfer to DfT Operator Limited on Sunday 12 October 2025 under the government’s Plan for Change.
  • The move will leave publicly owned companies operating half of train operators and almost 50% of passenger journeys that Great British Railways will oversee.
  • Officials highlight Greater Anglia’s performance, citing 93.9% of trains arriving within three minutes in April 2024 to March 2025, and say it will act as a network benchmark.
  • An integrated Anglia leadership is being formed, with Jamie Burles named integrated managing director (designate), alongside local upgrades including Beaulieu Park opening this month and Cambridge South early next year.
  • Further transfers are timetabled—West Midlands Trains on 1 February 2026 and Govia Thameslink Railway on 31 May 2026, with Chiltern and Great Western expected later—while ministers report early benefits on public routes and have yet to decide next year’s fares.
