Great White Suspected in Fatal Shark Attack on Sydney Surfer

Authorities tighten beach surveillance following a provisional great white identification.

Overview

  • NSW shark biologists said photos of the damaged surfboard point to a great white measuring about 3.4–3.6 meters as the likely attacker.
  • Australian media identified the victim as Mercury Psillakis, a 57-year-old experienced surfer who was married with a young daughter.
  • NSW Police official John Duncan said the surfer lost several limbs during the attack off the Long Reef and Dee Why area.
  • Several northern Sydney beaches remained closed on Sunday as officials added two extra hooked buoy lines for alerts and tagging, plus drone and jet-ski patrols.
  • The death is Sydney’s first fatal shark attack since 2022, with Australia having recorded more than 1,280 shark incidents and over 250 fatalities since 1791.
