Great ShakeOut Will Trigger MyShake Test Alerts at 10:16 a.m. on Thursday

Officials urge West Coast users to check phone settings to ensure real quake warnings get through.

Overview

  • The International ShakeOut drill occurs at 10:16 a.m. local time on Oct. 16, with more than 53.2 million people registered worldwide and over 10 million in California.
  • The MyShake app will send a one-time test alert at that moment to users in California, Oregon and Washington.
  • The test message displays “Drill: Drop! Cover! Hold On!” and is intended to prompt the protective action practiced during the exercise.
  • Separate from MyShake, Android delivers built-in earthquake alerts and USGS and FEMA issue Wireless Emergency Alerts for expected magnitude‑5+ events, so residents should verify alert settings.
  • Bay Area Rapid Transit will activate ShakeAlert at 10:16 a.m., briefly stopping trains after slowing them to 27 mph as it tests rider messaging and response procedures.
